Sámi Duodji
The Sámi Duodjicertification mark has existed since the 1980s and is a well-known certification for genuine Sámi handicrafts. Copies of Sámi handicraft is a big challenge for Sámi handicrafters. The certification mark's purpose is to give buyers knowledge on which products are genuinely Sámi handicrafts. When you buy products with the Sámi Duodji mark, you will know that you support Sámi handicrafters and the Sámi community.
The Sámi Duodji certification mark is managed and distributed by Sámi handicraft organizations:

- in Sweden - Sámi Duodji Sameslöjdstiftelsen
- in Norway - Duodjeinstituhtta
- in Russia - Čepes Sam Arts and Crafts Association
Apply for the sámi duodji certification mark
Applications for the certification must be sent in digitally via this form.
Handicrafters who already have the Sámi Duodji trademark have to reaplly in order to use the new trademark. The old marks can not be used after 31.12.2023.
The licensing offices (Sámi Duodji ry, Sameslöjdstiftelsen Sámi Duodji, Duodjeinstituhtta ja Čepes Sam Arts and Crafts Association) will process the applications for the Sámi Duodji mark. The processing times and deadlines can be found on the web pages of the licensing offices.

Criteria for the Sámi Duodji certification mark:
- The product is handmade without the use of copying equipment
- Made by an individual Sámi, or a collective of Sámi people
- Made from traditional materials. The definition of traditional materials will be guided by a non-exhaustive list of example materials which will be updated from time to time by the certification mark owner.
- Has traditional Sámi duodji, traditional design or traditional use as a starting point.
- Sámi is a person who considers themself a Sámi and
- has Sámi as their domestic language, or
- has a parent, a grandparent or a parent of a grandparent who has had Sámi as their domestic language
For the Russian side of Sápmi the following definition of a Sámi person applies:
- You consider yourself a Sámi and substantiate that;
- You yourself, one of your parents or one of your grandparents are registered as a Sámi according to birth certificate or any other official document.
The criteria may be updated and modified from time to time by the owner of the Sámi Duodji certification mark – the Saami Council.
Product labels and license fee
Users of the certification mark must pay NOK 250 every other year for the license to use the mark. The fee covers costs for follow-up of the certification mark, marketing of the licensees and follow-up of misuse of the mark. When your application is accepted, you will receive 150 product labels; the product labels have the Sámi Duodji-mark and your personal license number. After this, you can order more labels as needed. You also get access to a digital marketing package that you can use to market your business.
